Just south of De Soto (Wisconsin) Battle Bluff rises high above the river; you'll know it by the distinctive south-facing slope that is nearly all goat prairie. From the top, the views are expansive. The picture below was taken in April, 2010, with the river a little high and just before the trees leaf out.
There are still places along the Mississippi where your best bet to get from one side to another is to ride a ferry, but some of those throwbacks have had a hard time in recent years. The ferry that shuttled cars and people between between Winfield, Missouri and Calhoun County, Illinois shut down about two

While I was out exploring Calhoun County (Illinois) last week, I came across this old barge that had been washed on shore long enough to accumulate a heck of a lot of mud in its cargo hold.
