Still June, still signing about mud. Pete Seeger, one of the most influential musicians in the past half century, wrote Waist Deep in the Big Muddy in 1967, a thinly disguised criticism of the war in Vietnam. He debuted the song on a Smothers Brothers show, but network executives stepped in and had it cut from the broadcast version. After the censorship was disclosed to the press, the network relented and invited Seeger back to the show to perform the song again. Seeger wrote about the experience back in 1983.
