April may have been flood month at the Song of the Day, but the rains are back and the river is rising again. The Mississippi River at St. Louis, already near flood stage, rose 5 feet in the last 24 hours, with another 5-6 foot rise projected in the next 3 days. So rather than run another month of tunes about floods, we’ve decided to go with related theme: mud. There will be plenty of Mississippi mud left behind when the waters finally recede.

So let’s kick off mud month with a song about a muddy river on the rise. Tom Pacheco, born in Boston and reared, you could say, in New York’s Greenwich Village in the 1960s, is a prolific singer/songwriter who you should get to know better. Big Muddy River was on his 1995 CD called Bluefields. Enjoy, but look out for the mud!
