Beginning today, the Destination of the Day will highlight places and events in geographic order from the Headwaters Region to the mouth of the Ohio River. Every month I will focus on the river communities in a single state. April belongs to Minnesota.

We’ll start in the northern Minnesota city of Grand Rapids, where Itasca Community College maintains several acres of woods that are open to the public. In one section, there is an easy trail through a bog, a rich and diverse (and wet) landscape where you can find orchids, carnivorous plants, and Labrador tea (and mosquitoes). See the Grand Rapids entry for directions.
