Keokuk may have had a rough go of it in recent years, but it still lays claim to one of the most impressive engineering feats on the Mississippi River–a hydroelectric power plant that was one of the world’s largest when it opened in 1913. If you visit Keokuk this weekend (June 30/July 1, 2012), you can join in River Power Days and tour the plant, which will be open to the public for the first time in a decade. Maybe I’ll see you there.
While you’re in the area, head down river a few miles to Warsaw, Illinois and help the town celebrate its bicentennial.
