Rising high above the flat Minneapolis terrain, the Foshay Tower is a monument to one man’s dreams and the fragile nature of success. The tower opened in August 1929, just weeks before the stock market crash that ushered in the Great Depression. The building was the dream of Wilbur H. Foshay, who soon lost his entire fortune, including ownership of the building branded with his name. An Art Deco wonder, the building rises 32-stories and was designed to mimic the Washington Monument. Foshay lived on the 27th and 28th floors. Today, the Foshay Tower is the W Minneapolis Hotel and the former penthouse is the Prohibition Bar, a classy place where you can sip expensive cocktails and take in the great views.
