Cairo, Illinois has been through some tough times, but through it all, Shemwell’s Barbecue, now run by the fourth generation of the family, has continued to put out good barbecue for a reasonable price. The sweet smell of smoking meat fills the small, no-frills interior that feels like a classic diner; the vinegar-based sauce is a nice complement to the smoked pork. Shemwell’s serves its own style of southern barbecue; if you come here expecting it to be like the ‘cue in Memphis or KC or Texas or some other place, you may be disappointed. So just leave those expectations at home and judge it on its own merits. And, as always, let me know what you think.
