This morning, Reggie McLeod (Publisher of Big River Magazine) and I were guests on the The Larry Meiller Show on Wisconsin Public Radio, talking about summertime fun along the Mississippi River. We had a great time talking about the places we love and managed to work in a few beer references, inspired by the microbrew experts who were his guests just prior to us.We hit a snag with the technology in the last 10 minutes of the show and didn’t get to respond to a few comments from callers, so here is what  I would have said.

Pizza
There are a few unusual pizza joints between Cochrane and Prescott, Wisconsin.

  • Suncrest Gardens (May: Th evening; June-Aug Th,F evenings; Sept: F evenings); near Cochrane, Wisconsin. A family farm that turns into a pizza joint one or two evenings a week in summer.
  • A to Z Produce (Tuesday evenings from roughly early spring to Thanksgiving); near Stockholm, Wisconsin. Another family farm; they get so busy in the summer that you probably won’t enjoy yourself too much; wait until it starts to get cold, then go.
  • The Stone Barn (F-Su 5p-9p in the summer); nine miles from Nelson, Wisconsin; serves gourmet pizza in a partially reconstructed 19th century barn.
Reno Bottoms and the pike: Not only is this a good place for an easy hike, but it is also a great place to watch bald eagles any time of year.
River Junction Traders: A fun place to shop, but try to come back sometime for the Trader’s Jubilee, a weekend of events of people in period clothing doing period things.
The rest of the summer I’ll be in Minnesota exploring the Mississippi River from the Headwaters to the Twin Cities. Check back here for new stories and follow my updates on Facebook.
