The beaver we know today is nothing like the beaver of prehistoric times. Those beasts (Castoroides ohioensis) got as big as 8 feet and 220 pounds, about as big as some black bears today. That’s a lot of beaver! So it’s not entirely implausible that a giant beaver could eat a modern American city, as described in the song written and performed by Michael “Hawkeye” Herman, The Beaver That Ate Moline. Herman is a native of the Quad Cities, so he’s familiar with the terrain, and he probably knows about those giant beavers of old.
