It’s spring and the Black Horse Inn in Sherrill, Iowa is open again. Built in 1856 and operated for decades as a roadhouse, it is now a unique bed-and-breakfast. Rooms are large, modern, and reasonably priced and decorated with objects collected by the owner from travels around the world. On weekend nights, the B&B also throws a four-course dinner built around seasonal ingredients. If you’re looking for an alternative to the cookie cutter rooms of chain hotels, the Black Hawk Inn is a fine choice. Sherrill is a quiet community just 15 minutes from downtown Dubuque.
