The Magdalena River slices a thousand miles through the heart of Colombia. Jordan Salama spent four weeks one summer following the course of that river to learn more Colombians and the importance of the Magdalena to them, a trip that inspired his book, Every Day the River Changes. In this episode, I talk with Jordan about that trip and the river that inspired it. We talk about how the Magdalena got on his radar and the experience of traveling along it. He shares stories about some of the people he met and the importance of the Magdalena in their lives. He discusses some of the threats facing the river, including an unusually large one – hippos that have become established in part of the Magdalena. We finish with a story about how the trip and reaching the end of the Magdalena impacted him personally.
