Budget Travel put out another one of those silly articles that national magazines specialize in, the kind where they pick the 11 (that number is surprisingly common) best of something or other in the whole country:

  • The 11 Best Honeymoon Locales for your Second Marriage!
  • The 11 Most Gecko-Friendly Hotels!
  • The 11 Most Shallow Travel Articles Ever!

A recent post selects the “11 Greatest Riverfront Towns.” I could quibble with the fact that the article has a few embarrassing errors (Herman, Missouri is on the Missouri River, not the Mississippi), or I could complain that I’ve seen a gradual decline in the quality of articles in Budget Travel with a coincident increase in the number of downright silly ones. But, I’ll stay positive today.

I’m happy to see that four of the Greatest Riverfront Towns are on the Mississippi River: MinneapolisSt. Paul, Memphis, New Orleans, and Davenport, Iowa. (Hmm, I wonder if they read my post about the Mississippi River towns with the best riverfront spaces. An updated version of that piece will be published in the July/August issue of Big River Magazine.)

It’s been a good month for the Mississippi. Besides the Budget Travel attention, Wisconsin’s portion of the Great River Road was voted the Prettiest Drive in America in a poll of Huffington Post readers. Maybe these stories will convince more folks to get out and explore the historic and scenic places of the Mississippi Valley. I’ll see you there.
